Introduction

The global ozone generator market reached USD 1.65 billion in 2026 and is expected to grow to USD 2.36 billion by 2030 at an average annual rate of 8%. Water treatment alone accounts for 58% of the entire market. Where does Türkiye stand in this growth, and where is the sector heading?

I want to answer this question not as an ozone generator manufacturer, but as someone who sees the sector from the inside. Because in Türkiye, the ozone sector stands before both a major opportunity and a serious maturity test.


Where Is Türkiye in Ozone?

Türkiye is well behind Europe's largest ozone technology markets. Germany alone constitutes a market of approximately USD 115 million in the ozone generator segment in 2026, while no official measurement of this figure even exists for Türkiye. But the ground-level trajectory shows this gap closing rapidly.

Ozone adoption in Türkiye began with textile wastewater treatment. Denim bleaching, colour removal, and COD reduction were the first major application areas for this technology. Then came food and meat processing, poultry farming, and pool applications. Today the picture is far broader: pharmaceuticals, aquaculture, municipal wastewater, drinking water treatment, and industrial odour control are forming the sector's new growth areas.


The Forces Fuelling Growth

Tightening regulations: Türkiye's EU harmonisation process is bringing progressively stricter requirements in water treatment and wastewater discharge standards. For facilities unable to meet discharge standards under the Water Pollution Control Regulation, advanced oxidation — including ozone — is becoming a mandatory investment.

Demand for chemical-free production: Global brands' supply chain sustainability requirements are pushing food and textile exporters in particular to reduce chemical disinfectant use. ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals), the EU Green Deal, and exporters' organic/natural labelling targets directly feed ozone's positioning as the ‘cleaner alternative’.

Water scarcity and recovery: Türkiye ranks among the countries under greatest water stress. The recovery and reuse of treated wastewater is turning ozone technology into a new growth engine. Globally, 113 billion m³ of wastewater is released into nature untreated each year; the pressure to change this picture is directly reflected in ozone markets.

New sectors opening up: Aquaculture, pharmaceuticals, municipal drinking water, and pharmaceutical wastewater — each of these is still in its infancy in Türkiye from an ozone standpoint. The growth potential in these sectors over the coming years is extremely high.


The Sector's Blind Spots

Alongside the growth, the sector also has serious problems to solve. These need to be discussed openly.

Devices without CE and LVD certification: Ozone generators without CE certification — often manufactured with low-cost imported components — are sold freely in the market. These devices both threaten operator safety and prevent customers from obtaining genuine compliance documentation. It is impossible for companies exporting to Europe to pass audits with an uncertified device.

Engineering shortfalls: The vast majority of systems installed with a ‘fit the ozone device, solution complete’ approach fail to deliver the expected results. Applications that fail to account for engineering parameters such as ozone dose, CT value calculation, reactor design, and transfer efficiency lead both to customer dissatisfaction and to scepticism about the technology.

Import dependency: The fact that critical components such as electrodes, dielectric tubes, transformers, and reactors are not manufactured domestically leaves the sector vulnerable to exchange rate fluctuations and supply chain disruptions. Reducing this dependency is critical to the sector's sustainable growth.


Where Are We Heading, from OCS Ozone's Perspective?

The ozone sector in Türkiye will move to a much more mature and competitive structure over the next five years. We see several key trends shaping this transition:

System integration will come to the fore. Solution partners who offer not just generators but oxygen generators, reactors, control systems, and SCADA integration from a single source will pull ahead. Customers now want to buy not just a device, but a working system.

Certification will become mandatory. EU harmonisation pressure and the audit requirements of exporting companies will accelerate the elimination of CE/LVD-uncertified devices from the market. This represents a significant competitive advantage for quality domestic manufacturers.

Localisation will deliver gains. Companies producing critical components domestically will gain both cost advantages and supply security. Being a pioneer in this area in Türkiye will become a decisive factor in global competitiveness.

Aquaculture and pharmaceuticals will take off. Türkiye's aquaculture production is growing rapidly; the pharmaceutical industry must meet GMP requirements. Both sectors are still immature for ozone in Türkiye, but growing very fast.

Uncertified devices, engineering-skipped implementations, and import dependency are slowing this technology's path to its true potential.
